Semi-geostrophic System with Variable Coriolis Parameter

چکیده
We prove short time existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions ( in C with k ≥ 2) to the 2-D semi-geostrophic system and semi-geostrophic shallow water system with variable Coriolis parameter f and periodic boundary conditions, under the natural convexity condition on the initial data. The dual space used in analysis of the semi-geostrophic system with constant f does not exist for the variable Coriolis parameter case, and we develop a time-stepping procedure to overcome this difficulty.

Numerical representation of geostrophic modes on arbitrarily structured C-grids
A C-grid staggering, in which the mass variable is stored at cell centers and the normal velocity component is stored at cell faces (or edges in two dimensions) is attractive for atmospheric modeling since it enables a relatively accurate representation of fast wave modes. However, the discretization of the Coriolis terms is non-trivial. For constant Coriolis parameter, the linearized shallow w...
متن کاملA Terrain-Following Coordinate System-Derivation of Diagnostic Relationships
Generalized hydrostatic and geostrophic equations can be derived from the equations in the terrain-following framework. The generalized hydrostatic equation permits some non-hydrostatic motions (as obtained from a Cartesian framework) to remain when a non-zero slope exists. Correspondingly, the generalized geostrophic wind permits a horizontal divergent component (in addition to divergence caus...
متن کاملNew equations for nearly geostrophic flow
I have used a novel approach based upon Hamiltonian mechanics to derive new equations for nearly geostrophic motion in a shallow homogeneous fluid. The equations have the same order accuracy as (say) the quasigeostrophic equations, but they allow order-one variations in the depth and Coriolis parameter. My equations exactly conserve proper analogues of the energy and potential vorticity, and th...

2.1 Structure of the atmospheric boundary layer Wind is moving air caused by pressure differences in the atmosphere, initiated by temperature differences. At large heights (~1000 m) the wind is not perpendicular to the isobars but parallel to it due to the Coriolis force (perpendicular to the wind direction, caused by the rotation of the earth). This wind is denoted the geostrophic wind. G : pr...
متن کاملAn Explication of the Coriolis Effect
The object of this note is to provide an interpretation of how motion on the rotating earth is affected by that rotation. The physical principles to be used are extremely well known, but as far as I know, have not been applied to this problem in precisely this style, a style designed to avoid the solution of differential equations. In spite of its long history, the subject is very much alive, e...
